In a world where are all being compelled to look inwards, one 19th century painting from an Indian desert kingdom captures the essence of our search.

Three Aspects of the Absolute, page 1 from a manuscript of the Nath Charit (detail), 1823, by Bulaki (Indian, active early 1800s). India; Rajasthan state, former kingdom of Marwar, Jodhpur. Opaque watercolor and gold on paper. Courtesy of the Mehrangarh Museum Trust, RJS 2399.

How does one depict the transcendent and the immanent divine, i.e., the idea that God is within, and without, us, is something as limited as a painting?
